I hope Federer doesn't feel down, he played a great match against the best player now, and has played an extraordinary tournament, what i'm trying to say is that he's not done yet at all, today Novak was lucky because he hit that all or nothing return and got a winner, from that on everything changed, but Nole, with those 2 MP for Fed, was done, and he did think it was the end.

Nobody gets that lucky to save 2mp two years running.

The luck came in the form that Federer never used to consider losing, now he second guesses and acts human. I would think playing a crap match would be easier to accept than the fact that mentally he couldn't see it through or at least force the breaker after losing serve.

Early doors on return and both look pretty sharp.

Btw this momentarily delay everyone takes after the first game is really irritating, just walk around the other side and get on with it.

unfortunately i think your right if he can beat nole who he has a slightly less problem beating now and then rafa forget it but still i guess we still need perspective. one final, semis, and quaters dont necessary mean he should hang his racket up as even sampras at 30 wasn't a top three player anymore.

but i guess now he can play davis cup as long as he can mentally be up for it though the best thing you can do when you lose a five setter like that is put your self in a pressure situation like davis cup i think now would be the time to focus on davis cup since he cant win slams. oh all those talking about sampras would have done this at 30 ,are you talking the same sampras that lost to a young fed in five sets where was his nerve and his serve then ?

Or the same Sampras who lost in straights to Safin and Hewitt in the 2 years before he won another USO.

Annacone is gonna have to earn his wage now because it could be a really long Autumn for Federer, although last year he had a strong finish to the year.

Also Fed doesn't give much away on court but I wonder what his stamina is like nowadays, obviously you would expect Djokovic to have more reserves but I wanted to see more fire in the fifth especially with all the support but I just didn't see it.

Again I say no question the tennis is still good enough but mentally he is not as strong now and the big problem is all his opponents know it too.

Great match though, can't take anything away from that.

Murray displaying his sunny positive disposition again  Hardly inspiring confidence that he believes he can win this and then plays a great point out of nowhere. Must be pretty taxing to yoyo so much mentally.

I was jumping with the delight when Fed got the opportunity to serve for the win and was: :D 8)

10 mins later and I was: :x

Really disappointed Federer couldn't get through. Quality match though from both players. Just some mental lapses, hiccups, and Djokovic grit undid Fed today.

If his form & performances were poor or even average, then I'd be worried, but he's still playing well and appears to be in good shape. As such I still think he can, & will win another Grand Slam, but he's probably got to do it in the next 12, maybe 18 months.
I used to think I was indecisive... but now I'm not so sure.

Fed/Djok was an unbelievable match. Can't believe how little credit some people are giving Djokovic... I'd go into it more but I've a feeling it'd lead to a longer debate than what i'm prepared to get into right now :D

related to that

Q. When a guy hits a shot like that forehand on match point, is that a function of luck, of risk, or is it a function of confidence that someone would make kind of...

ROGER FEDERER: Confidence? Are you kidding me? I mean, please. Look, some players grow up and play like that. I remember losing junior matches. Just being down 5 2 in the third, and they all just start slapping shots. It all goes in for some reason, because that's the kind of way they grew up playing when they were down. I never played that way. I believe in hard work's gonna pay off kinda thing, because early on maybe I didn't always work at my hardest. So for me, this is very hard to understand how can you play a shot like that on match point. But, look, maybe he's been doing it for 20 years, so for him it was very normal. You've got to ask him.

what do you expect from a guy who just lost a match having had two match points veteran or not ask your self if you were in fed's shoes how would you be feeling ? i for one would take the fine and not do the presser because t i know 15 mins or how ever long fed had b4 the presser was never going to be enough time to really come to terms with that kind of loss.

One thing I do know is fed has always respected nole right from when nole beat the first time in Montreal and more so when they played the final in New York and when novak broke his slam duck fed considered him an equal of sorts being a fellow slam winner.

but i expected fed to say something controversial that lose hurt it's not hate for novak he just need to maintain his psyche so for now he tell himself nole was lucky to ease the pain of the loss. if it helps he could go two set up against hewitt then lose two sets then win having had two match points lol though not much lol

How would you feel if you were in the Us open semis and had match point for the final yet still lost ?

What about the final? I have been really impressed with how Nadal has improved his level every round, I know he is 5-0 this year against Nole but now he is No.1 and expected to win, I fancy Nadal to sneak this one now.

Would like to see Stosur win as well but I can't see it happening.

Nadal has only dropped 1 set this whole tournament. He is playing really well, and is acting like a Ninja. There wasn't that much attention on him.
