Risk shot is what makes TS3 more realistic.

I am not sure about the full blown tour, but I am willing to create a Interest Gauging Tournament. Will do so tonight.
what i meant was not that the element of risk shouldn't be there but the the buttons, as you saw in ts3 once mastered the risk shot triggers were abused. i liked the the risk in the game just not the fact that hitting that close to lines often could be mastered taking out the risk element to a degree.

Thats why sim was made. anyone can hit repeated double risks with 90 wings, but try it with 51 FH. If you are amazing you will make most, but certainly not all.

After almost 3 years I haven't seen anyone master the risk. Norberto came close, but ask him how many errors did he make while playing me :)

You could get good at risking various shots, but, so can your opponent. And with two buttons for risking, there are tons of different looks you can give you your opponent to miss.

Implementing element of the risk into the game fails somewhat, as illustrated by TS4. There is no right amount. Why? ...because it will always be master as there are less complexity involved in selecting and hitting a shot from users point of view - one button. Where it TS3 you had the option to press one button, two buttons + two buttons with other trigger, plus 3 buttons - all to hit one shot, same shot that takes one button to hit with TS4. And you had a choice of what type of shot to hit. And guess what..... Control shots were there as well. They are nothing new, they just haven't explained them in TS3 so they were discovered much later. I could destroy a lot of good players with control shots.

Don't get me wrong, there are tons of problems with TS3, but the concept was better, deeper, more satisfying and with almost unlimited re-playability. A few major "holes" in the game combined with a horrid way of handling lag is what turned people off the most.

Build a character with high serve, volley, and decent speed. I think I used something like:

FH = 80
BH = 50
Serve = 90
Return = 40
Volley = 90
Power = 80
Speed = 80
Stamina = 50

If I remember correctly:

You need to serve very well. Hold RB when you serve, but make sure you release it before you hit the serve. Don't try to make your player run to net - let the RB do it's job and you'll get there quicker. If the return is low, use the slice volley - if the return is high, use the flat volley. Use risk on every volley, especially the LT+X on the low volley.

I put most of my groundstroke stats on one side so I have at least some kind of weapon. Whenever I would get a forehand, I used the double risk. I tried to run around my backhand as much as possible to hit more forehands - there's no button for it like on TS4, but it is possible.

i used exactly the same setup except i sacrificed 5 stamina points to have 75 Fh and 60 BH.

And the year learning curve sounds about right to me, but when mastered you can really rattle opponents. especially on sim when they are forced to pass again, and again, and again, and again. Only the very best players can do it consistently like that.
