360 Does NOT Support TRUE 1080p + PS3 vs. 360

Postby Goatman455 » Tue, 15 Mar 2011 15:18

Ok, I just wanted to let all you guys know about Microsoft's marketing genius (or lies) because I see a lot of people who said they were going with the 360 version "if it supported 1080p". In fact, neither system can handle the graphical quality modern games are putting out at 1080p, it's just too many pixels for these old systems (they don't even have a gig of ram, my system from circa 2000 has 1gb.)

99.9% of xbox games that state they run in 1080p DO NOT ACTUALLY RUN IN 1080p. Microsoft can get away with this somehow because the 360 has a built in upconverter that converts any image to 1080p. Of course, on a LCD TV with fixed pixels, you aren't seeing any image unless it's upconverted to your set, so MS claim is BS.

It's like saying that a DVD is 1080p compatible because the DVD player can convert the movie to your TV, maybe so, but it doesn't look like a TRUE 1080p blu-ray.

PS3s up conversion works a little different and as such, their boxes tend to be more honest, though not always.

Point is, don't make your decision based on that, because MS knows how important it is to you and is putting it on their box so you will buy their version even though they are both going to be ~720p as they always are.

With that said has anyone played both versions? Is there a version that is supposed to be better? Load times, gameplay, graphics?

PS3 was clearly the lead for Top Spin 3 as it got Nadal, the games seem more even this time around, but since I have both consoles I need to know which version to get before I go to the store today.

If anyone has any insight at all it would be great, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

P.S. I have a degree in Management Information Systems, not trying to brag, but if I don't put my qualifications, people probably will be more likely to ignore this information because I could just be a random person on the internet who doesn't know what he's talking about. That's simply not true, I am a random person on the internet who does know what he is talking about.

Thank you, I hear everyone is very helpful and quick to respond here. I see at least the latter is true :)

So, now that we know neither system is capable of true 1080p, what do you guys think:

360 or PS3?

PS: Yes, I did read the other thread, but no one actually had facts, and no one who commented had any sort of real comparison, it was just their subjective opinion. Anyway know of the pros/cons of the 360 vs PS3?

They have to be close but they are NEVER identical, I have played many cross platform and NEVER ONCE have I seen an identical game.

I saw a PS3 Version Video yesterday and it looked washed out compared to the 360 Version. I mean a lil bit loveless pale and with less Contrast.

But besides that and the Movesupport the two Version should be identical.

I am playing with 720 p over my Component Cable anyway because I play over my Hauppauge HD PVR but even this Resolution looks always slightly better than the most PS3 Games.

Thanks for the response, I have noticed the PS3 washed out color palette as well sometimes.

Some games on PS3 that claim 720p are actually less. GTA 4 was proven to be somewhere in the range of 630p on PS3 while it was actually 720p on 360.

While Rockstar never admitted (Is it just me or are Large American Companies SHADY AS HELL!) this, advanced graphical editors actually counted pixels and came up with a logical explanation the PS3 version just didn't look as crisp: IT WAS SPORTING OVER 10% LESS PIXELS!

It's a shame the companies aren't honest, because they know which version is better, it's obvious. If they are going to make uneven versions they sell for the same $$$ at least be honest about it. I actually ended up buying both versions of GTA 4 because it looked so bad on my Sony TV on PS3. I was much happier with the 360 version. I shouldn't have to waste my money this way to ensure I have the better version.

At this point, I am considering getting both until I can figure this out and then return one.

Yeah may be, but you know it's a Question of personal Taste too. If I mean slightly better then I only mean slightly and not a big Difference.
Maybe you should ask yourself over which Console you like the Onlineservice more or the Competition online.

Because I have both System too, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 and I prefer Xbox Live and the Xbox 360 Version.

But at the end of the Day you are well served with both Versions, no matter which you pick because the Differences are to small to call one Version bad and one good.

You decide. :)

Thanks for all the responses so far

Well I have move, but I also have limited HDD space on the PS3. Thing is, version comparisons are going to be all over the internet in the next few days. After I buy one, I do not want to be reading how I bought the inferior version of the game.

It may not seem like a big deal to some, but I think it is ridiculous I can pay the same $60 and not get the best version.

Has anyone seen any screen shot comparisons or anything?

Hm not yet but it's like I said. It depends on more Things than just the Graphics.

I made my Decision which to choose one month ago because I was always in the sure boat with the 360 Versions but you will see.

FIFA 2011 and PES 2011 for example were the last Games I buyed for the PS3 and I didn't regret it.

I mean TS4 is another and new Case but you'll see. ^^

So you think the 360 is going to win? Graphics and Framerate are really the 2 things that differ the most between versions.

Hmm, this is tough, I think I would go 360 if it weren't for the move, also I had Top Spin 3 on PS3 and it was fine.

EXCEPT IT ISN'T 1080P!!! If you have a 1080p LCD TV, then you have a fixed pixel set, your TV ALWAYS HAS 1920x1080 pixels, this isn't a CRT you know, it can't change RES.

That means that every TV has a built in up converter so if it were to receive a signal with less than 1920x1080 it can convert it and fill up your screen. If the game was not upconverted only 1280x720 of those 1920x1080 pixels would be filled leaving a strange looking picture.

Point is, by your (and Microsoft's) definition EVERYTHING is TRUE 1080p played on a 1080p TV. Unless of course you were only messing around, in which case, this disclaimer is needed for people who may have believed you.

So, I am hearing the PS3 looks washed out compared to the 360. Is this the only difference? That would be quite an achievement if so.
