As sarcastic as this comment sounds  I think this is a good idea. I had a similar one a long time ago and still think it is good.

Basically, everything should be timing based. The only stats that you should control are physical ones.

- Power
- Speed
- Stamina
- Reflexes

All other stats should be equal in every player. In fact, there is no reason to even show them in the beginning stages,l but rather later, a depiction of the way you play and your stats. Sort of - "here, based on your performance, this is what you do better then your opponents". The way you time your strokes and shots you use should determine your strengths. For example if you are good at timing a ball on-the rise, by releasing the button at the right time in that small window - then you are in essence a Semi-Volley King. Not because you have a skill that makes it easier for you to do so, but because naturally, somehow, you are able to do it better then the next guy. Same goes for serving.

This kind of setup will require tons of separate timing windows with different effects. As well as each stroke (top spin, slice, flat) should have its own "sweet spot" timing and not be all equal.

Exactly what I meant, :D

Have no groundstrokes at all:- only serves and volleys, with bh/fh chip returns. we will call it STEFAN EDBERG'S SERVE AND VOLLEY TENNIS, and it will be a bestseller.

I'd love a game fully developed under "cheesy" rules, so it will be a "cheesy" video game itself, ok, so when players around the world, most of them cheaters (let's face it), played the game trying to cheat and find shortcuts and tricks to win easily their matches they would end playing fair tennis matches, does it make any sense??, don't know about Nole, but it sounds like i am on drugs
Never underestimate the pain of a person, because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are just better at hiding it than others.

It's called Virtua Tennis, you may have heard of it.

I would like to see some sort of difereance between 1st and 2nd serve, maybe something like this: you can try make a power flat serve as a second serve but its really more likely for you to miss, like you need a crazy accuracy and timing to make it, and for a TS or slice serve its the same way as the first serve.

Or you could have 'clutch' as a serve rating as a component of the overall serve stat. Eg sampras has a higher error window on the second serve, while someone like Murray will more than not double fault if trying to hit big.

Make first serve much harder to execute.

Then make second serve twice as hard.

This way you will be forced to go safe on second.

first/second serve is definitly a point there some fixes would be helpful.
I would rly love a slower second serve, no matter what ur stats are (lets say 20% less power/service available). Would be way more realistic and would add some more tactic to the game

This feels artificial.
I think all serves should be harder to hit, and because of this, you must play a safe second serve. If the first serve is easy to bomb, then chances are the 2nd serve will get bombed too.
If the first serve (flat, power) is very tricky, then people will use topspin or slice serves on the 2nd more often.
I don't feel you should have to add an extra hindrance to the 2nd serve. Playing the 2nd serve safe(ish) should arise from the gameplay mechanics. Players should definitely have the option to go for broke on 2nd serves (think of it like risk shots in TS3....with both triggers). But these should rarely work because the serve is hard anyway.

It is not artificial is you make the timing for serve more sensitive to stamina and make sure first serve takes a good amount off it, to effectively shrink the timing window for the second serve :P

But the thing is, we need aces/ unreturnables off serves for this to be a vialable option. These days, serves do not get you more than 3 aces in a 2 hour match!

Here's an idea for TS5: Combination shots.

No, not like button combos in a fighter, but combining flat shots with the spin shots. The buttons are already in the perfect place for it too. Examples:

The flat button gives you a simple flat shot, and the topspin button gives you the normal topspin shot. But if you press both at the same time, you'd get a topspin shot that has less spin and more pace. You could do the same for slice, as well as....

Slice+Lob for a defensive lob. Topspin+Lob for an offensive lob. Again, the standard button layout is already perfect to hit both buttons with your thumb.

And like Djarvik said, serves just need to be harder to hit, especially powerful serves. If all serves are harder, you'll naturally have to go for less on the second to avoid double faults. You might even have to hold back a little on the first serve, to keep your percentage up and avoid hitting too many second serves.

Sry Rob but i think it would make the game overcomplicated for little reason, i like tennis and i enjoy top spin because i can play it when im tired, when im bored and whenever i want, i dont want to think if im pressing the two right buttons for an offensive lob, on the serves i agree thou its way too easy to serve, especially with SSB.
