?????????

Sampras at 40:15 in the fifth set leading 5:3 serving for it in the semifinal of the US Open at Arthur Ashe with his serve and losing his service game with a double? LOL I think not. Even if Federer wins this, which I sincerely hope he does, that was not a champion-esque performance in terms of closing the match out.

You do realise he is 30 years old, has 5 billion records and has won 16 Grand Slams... I think that proves he is a champion. Also, remember he is playing a guy who has lost twice this year, one of which was a retirement due to injury. I don't think you are giving Federer his due.

True, but I still don't see how anyone could even being to make an argument that Sampras was better than Federer -- especially with Sampras being basically incompetent on clay.

Plus this is a 30 year old past his prime Federer; he wouldn't have done that 5 years ago.

Really sad to see Federer missing the chance. Fair enough first mp
Novak took a massive cut of the ball but to lose the game on a double.

The worst thing about this is that tennis wise Federer proved he still has it but mentally he does not. He went asleep for two sets and then presented with the match on his racquet he blew it.

Even I am resigned to the fact that Roger will probably not win another slam because I cannot see how these losses can't pray on his mind now.

maybe he means a clown because he's so 'comical' off court? ...he is pretty clownish.

Gotta feel for Roger. He was so close to serving it out.

Thank you for the history lesson. I know how good Federer is and he is the greatest champion ever. But in terms of mental edge, Sampras has it. I think Federer should have won it with relative ease man and I am giving Federer credit where its due, but I'm only criticising the way he handled that game, and I think given the heat of the moment I have the right to say it.

Great play from both players.

I like Nadal, and wanted him to win the USO, but now that Nole won I would like him to win.

I'm just angry at Federer :(. I adore Federer's game and to see the way he went out disappoints me significantly because when I used to watch Sampras in these kind of situations he wouldn't let Djokovic or whoever he played come back the way he did. It's very sad to see. Age isn't issue, Sampras at 25 or 30 wouldn't give this opportunity away; nor would Fed but yeah I'm speechless.
