Belgian Beer

Postby Cro Morgan » Mon, 01 Feb 2010 20:34

As a student of beer, I bought a variety six pack of Belgian beer the other day. I must say, the Belgiantoneans know their beer. Not only does it taste very good - it's loaded with alcohol (compared to typical American swill).

This is what I drank (and I have the headache to prove it)...

Augustijn Ale (8% alc)
Gulden Draak (10.5% alc)
Bornem Double Abbey (8% alc)
Piraat Ale (10.5% alc)
Bruegel Amber Ale (5.2% alc)
Bornem Triple Abbey (9% alc)

If you're familiar with Belgian beer, are any of these more popular than the other - and what do you think about the taste - compared to other worldly beers?

I am very fond of our Dutch beer. But Blegian beer is the best.

Don't know these ones so well. Cause I prefer other drugs then alcohol.

There are so many, Belgium is the Mecca of good, strong beer. My fave that was pretty widespread is Kwak - a big part of that is the awesome glass, I brought one back with me!
But there are literally thousands of fantastic Belgian beers, I met a guy in Brussells who was collecting labels from different beers, he had SEVEN HUGE BINDERS full of labels (just one from each brand), and estimated he'd tried roughly half.
I wasn't a big fan of Dutch beer actually. Heineken is better from the source, tastes fuller than the stuff you can buy here. Jupiler was pretty common and I liked that, but the Dutch beers were quite a bit weaker than Belgians in general.

I've had a few Belgian beers (some sampler pack from Costco), and they were OK, but it's not really my type of thing for the most part...I like pale, refreshing lagers that I can drink in...um, plentiful amounts and not feel like dying. I really like Stella Artois, but that's not really what people mean when they say "Belgian Beer'...for the record my favorite beer is Sapporo.

I'm a Belgian myself, but I never drink any beer. I think it's filthy and stinks. No kidding. I rather have a nice glass of whisky.

I'm Dutch and living in Belgium, but hardly drink beer. Like Rocketsfall I just don't really like it that much. At least not the conventional beer, the special ones can be okay. I do prefer the Belgium beers over the Dutch though, Germany has got a couple of okay beers, and so does the Czech Republic (Pilsner Urquell).

The brands that are drunk most here are Jupiler, Stella Artois, Cristal, Maes and probably some others. That's what's usually coming from the tap in the bars. The ones named in the first post are more special beers, haven't had anyone of those 6.

Live near a bar where they serve 600 different kind of beers, each in their corresponding glass.

I love beer...it's just that these high-alcohol content, dark, hoppy beers tend to give me insane headaches- it's really not worth it in my opinion, unless you're only drinking one or 2 pints.

Cro Morgan,
Did all those 6 different beers come in same pack? We don't get that other here in London.

I love Stella Artois, 5.0% its my favourite beer.
As it says on a can of Stella, its 'Belgiums Original'

I am with John. I simply don't handle heavy beers well.

Japanese are my favorites.

I love some of or local NY breweries! Get it fresh from Bearkraft store, near buy....draft.

Yeah, me too. My favorite beer is 8%. Some IPA's are a bit too much though.

Yeah, a six beer sampler pack - all different.

The dangerous thing about the beer (or good thing, I guess) is that they were all as smooth as silk. Usually beer with a high alcohol content has a bite. Not these. Thankfully the beer was expensive. If they were cheaper, I'd have a drinking problem.

This be them...

Cro,

Is it because they have no "bite" that they are expensive? I would like to know if there is a correlation between the two.
