Something is telling me that Celine Dion and Mariah Carey are not the 'be all, end all' of female singers.

for sure....she lost a lot of power and range.....she shoul look at celine and learn how to take care of her voice....cause sometimes it's really embarrassing when she performs nowadays.

But in het prime, in my opinion, no one came even close to her. She had the lowest AND highest voice that other singers...and she could do amazing things with it, switching between voices effortlessly etc. That's why i see her as the best vocalist of the modern era.

Back in the day she was humble with amazing talent, now she is a total diva who goes overboard with the autotune. People who have maybe only seen the Mariah of the last decade would probably never know what an amazing vocal she had at the start.

She is tryin to compete with "performers" rather than demonstrate her voice which even now is better than most others out there. I wonder how her new record will compete against a retro Whitney one, not too well I think.

seems like i just cant stop replying:) I tend to forget not everyone knows the mariah from the 90's:) She does sing better than most of them, but i still think it's bad, cause i know how her voice used to be and how amazing it was. But while her voice is less, her songwriting has gotten fenomenal. Song like side effect are both musical and lyrical masterpieces. People think she's some stupid diva, but in reality she's really intelligent. No one can write amazing lyrics and melodies without having intelligence in them:)

But you're right...she shouldnt be competing with the younger ones...even though from 2005 till now she has been kicking their asses, she should start going to a more mature sound...I hate it when only 3-4 song on an album are real mature songs (Like Fly like a bird, circles, I wish you well etc) and timeless. But i think she will start doing those once she has beaten the beatles record of 20 #1s....and she's close...2 to go:)

Hello...before she got famous she was asked to write for whitney houston. She declined, and it's a good thing she did.

Jimmy "Jam" Harris: "From a personal stand point, Mariah's kindness stood out the most. She's a very caring person. We know from listening to her records how talented she is, but we didn't really know how talented she really is until we work with her in the studio. After working with Mariah, I can say, she's part of our family now. She's workaholic and definitely the mother of her career."

David Foster: "Working with Mariah was an extraordinary opportunity for me. It goes without saying that she's one of the world's greatest singers, but it was her musicianship that stunned me. She thinks like a record producer and lays her vocals down like a virtouso guitarist. Singer, Songwriter, Producer Mariah is a triple treat. Working with her was a wonderful experience from beginning to end."

Toni Braxton: really like Mariah Carey. She's wonderful, she's a writer, and a producer, and I don't think people give her credit as she should.

Mark Feehilly, Westlife:"You know the way you see people's names on the credits, and it's like, I wonder if she actually really did that or are they just getting their name on there [because they're] such a big artist?" vocalist Mark Feehilly asks. "I always wondered that about Mariah Carey, and I was so happy to find out that she actually sat there at the desk, pushing up and down the buttons. She actually does produce her own songs and she writes her own songs, too. So, as a big fan, it made me respect her even more." (Rolling Stone, July 2000)

Especially the David Foster quote....he's like one of the biggest producers ever....if he says something like that, then it is true!:)

Trust me she does not write songs 100% on her own. Maybe she has written a few songs here and there by herself, but I guarantee you they weren't singles and they were probably the result of the producers just throwing Mariah a bone (pun intended). Look at her, she's not exactly screaming "I am an accomplished songwriter, look at me".

producers are salesmen---they must sell their product....so, of course you will only hear good positive things from a producer...jaylove is right--she def is not writing the music...maybe some lyrics, but thats about it

No, cause when you don't carry a guitar, and don't sit behind a piano, people assume you can't write. Sure she doesn't write them all by herself, but like the quotes say: she is the mother of her own career.

Mariah used to write with Walter Afanasieff...they created like 10 #1 song together. After they split ways (he chose tommy mottola) HIS career went nowhere and couldnt write a decent hit. She on the other hand, kept popping out #1's. She;s worked with dianne warren, but didnt give dianne a chance to write more than one line...no singer would dare to do that to dianne Really don't underestimate her...

You obviously don't know what a producer is...what you desribed about is a record executive, not a producer

he was not praising HIS work....he didn't even mention a song...he only talked about her and how she behaved in the studio. If he wanted to sell a product with his quote, then he would have said something like: This is such a great song, and mariah sings it wonderfully. Really you should listen to it.
