No one can sing it like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI1rb60y ... re=related

Especially from the brigde till the end....and the belting in the end...amazing...i wonder how a human being could use so many aspects of her voice in so little time, but with so much perfection...one of my fav performances ever:)

She seems to have lost the realy soulful element to her voice that she used to have, her voice sounds a lot less colourful nowadays. Some of these early performances from her are right up there.

Yeah maybe but i'm not taking that "skill" for any artistic feeling...
I'm ok with you those kind of singers can do amazing performance...Technically!But it's completely empty...
To me it's powder in the eyes (it's a french quote...Dunno if it works in English...)...It's not because you can shout in all possible ranges that you are a singer to me...You're impressive (to me you're not) technically but you're not a singer...

I agree with Matheja. After Celine Dion released that horribly mutated joke of a song (something about "do you believe in love after love") with blatant pitch correction on EVERY SINGLE WORD like it was something to be proud of, all of a sudden it became the cool thing to do.

"Just sing off key, we'll make it sound like Celine with pitch correction!"

I blame her and her ProTools happy manager for ruining modern vocals.

Ahh, you're right. I still hate the song, no matter who was responsible.

for sure....she lost a lot of power and range.....she shoul look at celine and learn how to take care of her voice....cause sometimes it's really embarrassing when she performs nowadays.

But in het prime, in my opinion, no one came even close to her. She had the lowest AND highest voice that other singers...and she could do amazing things with it, switching between voices effortlessly etc. That's why i see her as the best vocalist of the modern era.

Back in the day she was humble with amazing talent, now she is a total diva who goes overboard with the autotune. People who have maybe only seen the Mariah of the last decade would probably never know what an amazing vocal she had at the start.

She is tryin to compete with "performers" rather than demonstrate her voice which even now is better than most others out there. I wonder how her new record will compete against a retro Whitney one, not too well I think.

if you guys are talking about mariah carey? i have one thing to say...she can sing well....she can hit 7 octaves i believe? or used to be able to? one thing i notice about her is she has such terrific range, but is only comftorable in one key....all of her songs are in the same key and all sound exactly the same....she got famous for boofing her old ass record producer and also got famous for that one song where she hit the highest note in the world and made my windows shatter...other than i have not much respect for her as a vocalist...i think that celine can sing way better than mariah IMO neways......but, i think also one of the best females vocal wise would have to be Patsy Cline---she could really sing and i mean really really sing i know im taking it back to the 60's, but thats my opinion

I am still of the opinion that Celine is the best female vocalist in the world, she has power, range, soul and clarity to her voice that has endured. Then you have Whitney of the late 80's and Mariah of the early 90's.

However this is only from a technical point of view , people just used to be waiting for them to nail the big notes and hold them.

No one can do 7 octaves...she has like 4,5 and that is A LOT. And her songs are not in one key...:) Even thought the productions don't sound like it, but her melodies are very complex. And about Tommy mottola. Yes she married him, but that's not why she became famous. NO one can become famous for sleeping with someone else...tommy can't force people to buy her album. If anything, he kept her a prisoner and she wasnt allowed to do anything but sing. And when she broke away from him, she started writing much better songs, much more classics...hell she has the longest running #1 of the decade while Tommy was sabotaging her career. She is the mother of her own career. I don't understand why other singers like whitney and celine get more respect when they only sing. Mariah at least writes and produces 99% of her own songs, and makes them #1 on her own strength:) She doesn't need dianne warrens and david fosters to get a hit:)

you think she actually writes her own songs? maybe the lyrics--maybe the lyrics, but nothing else....she is a performer not an artist
