I haven't read much in the past few days about this, but I was under the impression it was a manslaughter charge, NOT a homicide.

As in, the police realize he didn't intend to kill MJ, but he was still the one responsible for his death. This is the same type of charge that a drunk driver will face if his/her negligent driving ends up killing someone.

Yeah but GOA, it's called ethics.
The doc is bound by the hippocratic oath to practice/prescribe/administer medicine in a manner that upholds the principles of his profession. Clearly he didn't do that, hence in this case -the manslaughter charge.
