...that's if you clear your cache. Since you haven't played online yet you probably won't need to do this.

Clearing the cache deletes all game updates. No permanent loss as the game will again add the update the next time you play. You don't lose any of your saves, etc.

Are you sure, because why would you lose all your points in TS3 when you clear your cache if you don't lose your saves?

After clearing the cache and restarting FIFA09, the update is added automatically there as well. So I suppose this will be the case for all games that have had updates.
