Opponent's bad connection

Postby ray237 » Tue, 27 Sep 2011 20:57

Happens very often that you have a good connection (NAT 2 and ps3 as dmz server in my case), but you meet an opponent with a very bad connection.
In better cases, the problem is in his upload ports or speed, so the ball freezes just after he hits the ball and this doesn't affect the game overall...
In worse cases, the problem is in his download ports or speed, so the ball freezes just before bouncing in his court, and the problem is that your opponent is able to choose the correct direction during the freeze (even if you make a wrong foot shot hitting lines and he chose the wrong direction at first...), so it's almost impossible to hit a smart winner like a wrong foot shot or a banal shot while he thinks to go for the wrong foot direction...
I think this situation sucks a lot, because it isn't my fault if my opponent does not have forwarded ports or hasn't set his router... i think that even with a 56k modem you can play well at ts4, because it doesn't use lot of bytes....
So it would be nice if we were able to stop the match and talk to the host about the connection...

you can do it from your router. Putting your ps3 in dmz mode means that you have all ports forwarded, so if you can correctly open ports with upnp it doesn't matter a lot, but sometimes upnp doen't work well or there are other problems, so i use dmz to be sure my ps3 will be ok

Yeah I know what you mean...

Mostly it happens, when there is a big distance between the players.

I had it also in one of my matches....

Too bad :-(

But I don't know what you can do, if everythings laggy? I mean, the match has to be played anyway :-/

I'n Thinking about the different video signals (pal or ntsc if i remember) and i'm wandering if the problem is in that difference. For example me from italy with my router set up perfectly and less than 40 ping, my opponent from brazil... All points the ball froze just before bouncing in his court, while he said that he didnt have freeze at all. So it's very strange, unless there is some kind of "slowing force" from his side...

I think the first thing you must do if forget the idea that it is "my opponent's connection" - it should be "our connection", the connection you share with your opponent. It's probably just the distance, and not a bad connection from either player.

I've also wondered how these games deal with the PAL/NTSC difference. I imagine that it actually isn't a problem - the game is probably still running at the same rate for both players, but it just repeats frames to give us 50 or 60 fps.

Ok but why my opponent said that his match was totally smooth and that he didn't have any freeze? I think that both players should experience lag, otherwise this means that one opponent's video is slower than the other's one.

In that case the opponent was me, i have played Murmeltier88 and ray237 yesterday and the match for me went perfect with no lag at all, but both complained about lag problems. The ball never froze after i was hitting any shot. I told you ray that you shouldnt be blaming my connection because of lags. It could be other issues too. And ray, just for you to know, my router has the same settings as yours and my video is ntsc!

So for this i think it was a pal/ntsc problem, cause my tv is pal... so i'm forced to think that ntsc or your tv/ps3 is slower than mine... or that 2k made some mistake so the ntsc version of the game is different

Hmm, your sentence makes no sense, if anything his ps3/tv is faster than yours beacause while hi´s were running fine yours had to compensate for the speed diference.

No, it's the exact contrary. I freeze so at the same time i have the time to freeze and play, while he just plays without freezes. After the freeze, the ball doesn't appear in another place, but just restarts his travel from the place where it froze. So where is the time during the freezes?

Call me crazy, but if I have lag and my opponent doesn't, I think it is a problem with my connection. His game is running smooth, and mine isn't - I don't see how I can blame him.

I found out what's happening with online lag but dont want to post in forum as it's a cheat. just going to make mods aware of this to see if 2K will be able to stop it before it goes massivley worldwide.
