If one of those things are off, then your second serve delivery is either weak, or in the net.

That kind of pressure isn't felt in the game at all. If I have a big server, then I just do the same button press and analog stick roll that I've been doing over and over. The pressure is there but it's not the same magnitude as actually playing the real life game of tennis.

Exactly. The reason why a second serve in this game can't be comparable to a second serve irl is because of this. There is so much less that can go inherently wrong in the game. You can't accidentally toss the ball a little bit behind you when you're break point down on your second serve. You will automatically make a perfect toss in the game regardless of 'pressure'. People can and do still regularly bomb second serves in in the game anyway without double faulting now, just not on a line. If you're all pining for realism then surely this issue should be resolved, finding a way to stop people hitting 135+ mph second serves.

The problem is that by reducing the accuracy of serves in general, first serves don't give much of an advantage. Playing last night, I literally returned 95%+ of serves, including massive servers bombing first serves in. As well as that, return is pretty powerful and I can nearly always hit a deep return to the baseline on every power serve. Players barely ever get a free point on a big first serve now and don't get much initiative in a rally after one is returned. I don't think it's realistic to not get free points on good first serves throughout a match or to have 99% of big first serves returned. You all complained about the serve being too powerful but what about the return?

I think the main problem people had with serve was the serve berserker/focus service build. I agree, tone down those skills so they can't paint the line each serve but I don't think it was a right move to tone down all serves in general. I found it fair before - people could still get some free points on first serves but a lot of them, more than irl already, were returned and returned well too.

All they should have done was just leave first serve alone, tone down the serve berserker/focus serve skills and limit the accuracy and power you can get on power second serves. Nothing else needed to change.

That's what I feel could make the biggest difference in a tennis game (this is a little off topic, but the idea came to me recently). I think that no matter how small the window is for aiming/timing, people will always master it - which anyone who plays tennis knows, is not possible for any shot. The creator of Full Ace Tennis mentioned it was his reason for throwing in randomness for making serves - he didn't think there was any other way to ensure that no one could ever master it. What I think would be much better is randomness in the toss:

Depending on your character's stats, your toss could vary in height and placement (higher stats would get more perfect tosses, with less variation when it isn't perfect). It would still be possible to hit full power serves on the line, from any toss - but, the height would affect your timing, and the placement would affect your aiming (for example, if the toss is high and towards your right, you need to compensate for it by aiming more to the left and timing it later).

The player is still in control of their success (the game isn't just deciding that you should miss), but with all the variation in timing/aiming, it would be much harder to master. It wouldn't even make the game harder to pick up for casual players, they just wouldn't serve as well as they can now.

If they can make it as difficult as Djarvik said, so when going for the lines you'll rarely see the success rate climb above 70%, then the second serve will take care of itself - you'll automatically serve weaker because going for too much would be too risky.

After playing the game I can honestly say that the game once again feels balanced , people serving from the trim lines were seeing double faults left and right ,and when they got it in , they had to chase after balls to the angles .

Smart servers still get plenty of free points of their serves , its just not an ace fest anymore and many rallies were played .

Thank you TK2 sports you are on the right track.

Rob that is a brilliant idea. It's randomness but randomness that you can control! Go make the tennis game now and we'll all buy it! :D
