Usually your primary focus in Bball (including video games) is to guard the players with the ball and not necessarily steal the ball from them like you would in (European) football. You stay in the way of the player with the ball and the basket. Yes, there is almost always a "steal" button, but this should only be used occasionally when your opponent is dribbling or just starting a "move" and not when they are already "driving" to the basket.

You can also try to play defense away from the ball. Here you guard a player by either (1) staying between the player and the ball to keep him from getting a pass, or (2) staying behind the player but between him and the basket to keep him from getting an easy score. This is a tricky balance you try to keep between the two.

I played basketball 20 years of my life so this stuff is all second nature to me, and I seriously broke out laughing in my office when I read this. I can see now how if this is your first time ever playing basketball how you would not know this.

Thanks, yes i think i've watched about 5 games of basketball live, about 10 on tv in my entire life, and never played a videogame of it lol. i could probably only name about 15 basketball players so i am quite the noob. however i've picked it up and am now winning by about 15 points per game now hehe

NBA 2K10 was one of the best sports games of all-time (in my humble opinion). With Michael Jordan having a starring role in 2K11, can't wait.
