Question about tennis rule

Postby Ir0kuM4t4 » Sat, 22 May 2010 15:09

Hey everyone! I have a question, maybe some of you who really are sure about this can answer me. The other I was having tennis practice and in the middle of a point against my partner he did me a drop shot I ran for it and I was able to reach it and return the ball but as I had to run really fast I couldn't stop in time so what WOULD happen was that I was going to touch the net with my torso and lose the point for that. But I was able to avoid the net, like I shrinked my belly lol and I was able with my racket to push myself to my court again by pulling my racket against his court (I mean, against the ground of my opponent's side of the court). I was wondering if this is allowed? I know I can't touch the net by any means and I know that I can play a ball in my opponent's side (for example when facing a drop shot with under spin and the ball hits my court and goes back to my opponent's court again). Someone understood the situation? And if I so, someone could tell me if it is allowed, someone who knows well the rules? Thx in advance!

I don't have the rulebook in front of me, but I'm 95% sure that what you did is technically illegal. I have never seen this, but I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to cross over to the other side of the net during a point, even if it was just your racquet that touched the ground...

BTW- I've actually ran into the net before- chasing down a drop shot- and almost wrapped around the net

No you can´t

I´ll look for this rule in english, hold on

You lose the point, any part of you including the racquet is not supposed to cross the net, before the point is out of play anyway.

Here we go...rule 24.g
You lose the point if:
The player or the racket, whether in the player’s hand or not, or anything which the player is wearing or carrying touches the net, net posts/singles sticks, cord or metal cable, strap or band, or the opponent’s court at any time while the ball is in play

Thanks, Moralspain, no need to write it in english, I understand spanish, afterall I'm portuguese is very similar! :o Picachu what you said is not totally correct because you can actually pass the net, it seems that what you can't is hit the opponents court but you can pass the net with the racket because I even saw it already, Hewitt did a point like that against Federer once in Indian Wells 2006 if I'm not wrong. But thanks for the help! Damn it's a pity however, because I actually ended by winning that point, but partner did me a lob after I ran back and we hit some balls after and I ended by winning the point! (it seems I lost it hehe)

LOL I meant touching the other side.
It usually happens when you are chasing a dropshot and you try so hard to not fall on the net nor touch the other side of the court using your racquet or body.

What would happen if on match point, you were at the net and someone missiled the ball off your forehead and killed you, but the ball dropped over the other side of the net?

Your loved ones would receive a chunk of money - and a nice shiny trophy.

You lose the match as soon as the ball touches your head. Then you die

Then what Cro said :D

Same thing. Point ends when it touches any part of your body and you lose the point.

This is frequently assumed but not true. Your racket and your body can cross the net at ANY time as long as it does not interfere with your opponents. You cannot touch the ball when it is on the other side of the net unless it is on a backwards bounce.

You cannot touch the opponents court with your racket. But, if you are playing a singles match you could touch the doubles alley with your racket since it is not technically part of the court for that match!

(BTW Picachu, I know you corrected yourself in a later post. But I just wanted to point that out)

I thought you could go over as long as momentum carries you over

No, you cannot touch the opponent's court (the part of the court that is in play). Your body can hang over the net if it does not interfere with the swing of the opponents.
