how does this captain thing work? I mean can you change him after every game or sets of games?
you also mentioned the subs, what do you mean when you say use them?

With regards to subs, you have 15 transfers for the group stages. You get 15 more at the knockout stages.
When you may want to sub, for example, I recently took out my 2 Italian defenders as they have just played their match. I subbed in 2 Argentinian defenders in as they are playing tomorrow. Hence giving me more chance to score points. Of course, I can always sub back my Italian defenders again before their next match. (When I say sub, I mean transfer)
Transfers can be made at anytime, but must be completed before the scheduled kick-off time of the incoming player's next match in order to score points from that match.
So make sure you have the players you want transfered in before the kick off. If you transfer after the kick off, then I think you will waste it.

so...for example, now could I sub forlan with another player and then sub back him?
is this 1 or 2 transfer?

If you Transfer Forlan out and put say Messi in, that is one Transfer. If after Argentina match, you want to put Forlan back in and take Messi back out, that is another Transfer.
So that would be 2 Transfers used.

I don't think we pick a captain? (I thought I did, but I asked my friend, and he hasn't done).

so basically the way I understand it,
it's not necessarily the 'big' names that you need in your team, but rather of more importance is the fixture list.
in other words, to sub in and pick probable point scorers/clean sheets against the 'weaker' opposition.
