There does seem to be a double standard with a lot of people. Americans are (of course) psychopathic, xenophobic, obese fools with a huge violence problem in their society....but Rugby is 'better' than American Football because it's 'more violent' :?

I don't really care since I'm not a huge American Football fan, but it is a bit amusing.

Anyways I'll bet you guys (not from USA) didn't know that Rugby is actually huge in the eastern USA, as is lacrosse.

God bless America......

seriously speaking, violence is all around the world, not only in the US... sad i know..but the truth, and you can see how crazy we are, that we´re discussing which sport is the more violent........ seeing that as something positive

yeah, as much has been implied in previous posts. Not by me, though.
In my opinion, rugby is more free flowing with considerably less stops and starts. One of the many reasons why I prefer it. The factor of 'violence' is not the determining factor at all. It is part and parcel of the nature of this sport, but not the reason which would determine for me whether or not to watch a rugby match.
A similar type of reasoning I could use to say that I prefer boxing over UFC related stuff.
I mean others  find UFC/MMA more violent with more options to hurt an opponent. I don't particularly care for that at all. I prefer the tactics(be it defensive or otherwise) that go on in a boxing match rather than the 'street fighting' nature of that other sport.

for me at all both sucks - rugby and american football.
and yes the tackles interrest me at most in this sport
i only meant that RUGBY is more brutal than american football .
and this is true ,no?

also i agree with bloufo that rugby is more fun coz it have not this stopp and go and stopp and go in a permanently way -like in A. FOOTBALL:where is every 5 second a break !!

myself, i prefer european football or tennis coz i played that active in past
so everyone have his favorite kind of ball sports

about fightsport
- yeah when i watch a fighting sport like UFC or boxing ,yes than i will see real fights with KO´s and not dancing scary rabbits where are only hinting behind his gloves . that bored me .
and its doesn´t matter its boxing or mixed martial arts .
when i watch fightsport (boxing ,MMA ;K1 )than i prefer offense fighters where will knock out the opponent and not fighters who will win over pointdecision from judges-

by the way : tonight is big fightnight in germany
in boxing is fighting.........
KLITSCHKO vs.SOSNOVSKI
and UFC 114 is fighting........
QUINTON " rampage" JACKSON vs. RASHAD "sugar" EVANS

"According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes."

That's right, 11 minutes. Most of the time they're standing around - trying to figure out what to do next.

wow! that is a telling stat indeed.

with what games(admitedly not many) I have seen of NFL, it also just seems to me that once the QB receives the ball, that it's quite monotonous with what will happen next. Am I right in saying that on most ocassions he will try and pass the ball, maybe a few times run with it himself? And once that ball is passed there is no other passing movement, just the option for the receiver to run himself?(please correct me if I'm wrong here)

In a sport like rugby the equivalent to the QB would be the guy with the No 10 jersey- the Fly Half.
Now in a game he can pass the ball left or right (not forward), the ball can get passed back to him, he can kick for territory, he can kick directly out(if within his own 22m) and give his lineout jumpers the chance to win back the ball, he can chip the ball and try to retrieve it, he can grubber kick along the ground, he can drop kick for 3 points, and many many other plays.

For me anyway, I just don't get the attraction to NFL at all. (the millions that buy the Madden video games, strongly disagree with me )
Consider also the fact(as noted in Cro's post) that on average that the ball is only in play for like 10 minutes, makes the appeal for this sport very difficult to understand. I mean is it really big and popular in other countries outside the US? I'd be interested in knowing that.
Rugby is played at a high level in parts of Africa, Europe, parts of South America, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, and even the USA has a decent rugby team.
In addition, the game is also played at a respectable enough level in coutries like Canada and Japan.

well i understand you..but ill have to say i dont get the attraction of rugby..

yes, you can pass to one side to the other side, kick, drop, etc...but basically the game is lateral and run forward..and only the one who drop kicks has real skills..the other ones have to be really big, and the wings really fast, that's much of it...

i like american football because it's pure tactic and skills, although you need power and speed sometimes, its all about when you have to run, when you have to pass, how to defend...the qb needs passing skills, the runnerbacks know how to juke, recievers know how to catch...cornerbacks must know how to mark the recievers, etc...

event timeouts have to be employed correctly, you have to know when to run the clock, when to freeze it, but at the same time get the first down...etc. etc. etc.

@ Yippie,

you must not have watched many rugby matches
and you can accuse me of the same regarding NFL
so let's educate each other,

the skill set in recent modern rugby is far ranging. When I say the No 10 can use drop kicks and such tactics, I was not limiting that particular skill just to him. These days, especially in the top test playing nations, the whole back row of both wingers, both centres, the full back, and you could also include the scrum half here, are extremely adept at very many kicking skills besides running the ball.
I would even go as far as to say that even the 100-120 kg forwards have vastly improved ball handling skills and some of them are deceptively fast and can aid the backs in many tactical running manoevres.
Even your Argentinian Pumas are known for these types of skills right across the park.

Now this is the point where you jump in and pour some more NFL facts my way.
