anyone for a glass of milk?

Taking a break from the 'guns debate' and moving on to a faaaaaaaaaar less contentious subject (ahem)......

It's quite a 'dry' presentation - no snappy graphics or soundbites, but please, if you can spare 45 minutes, please please please watch this - make your own mind up having done so, but watch before deciding.

It's a talk by Professor T Colin Campbell (Cornell University) detailing his lengthy (40+ years) research into diet and it's affect (specific components of diet) on health/disease.

Yawn yawn, right? Wrong - check it out - I became vegetarian on the strength of this guys work (The China Study), and subsequently a vegan.

ps see, i hardly mentioned guns!!!!!

I will watch this later. Vegans are interesting, very different way to live your life. Couldn't do it myself, love meat and dairy too much.

I've been a vegetarian for most of my life (27 years) - so no need to convince me. I will watch the clip though, when I have a bit more time.

On the subject, have a look at this when you have time. Great/disturbing movie:

Amazing film Cro, thank you - just watched it this past week!! No doubt you've read 'Fast Food Nation'? I wouldn't necessarily recommend the film of the same name....it's good, but too watered down for my liking - too dissimilar to the book, which I found to be an astonishing piece of work.

You should check out one called 'McLibel' if not already seen?

I'll watch that later on too, but without watching it i have to say that in my opinion there's not forbidden food, a balanced diet is the key, but anyway i'll check it out later to give my opinion
btw I follow the mediterranean diet, no choice living where i live

be very interested in your opinion sir - would have agreed with your perspective a few years ago....not anymore - the weight of evidence is just too strong (and i mean qualified, measured scientific evidence - not the media-style stuff)

I read somewhere veganism can cause a severe deficiency in a certain vitamin, i think its B12, which is only really obtainable from animal products, and without it you can die a pretty awful death, it makes your nervous system basically meltdown. However these days breakfast cereals are fortified with it or you can take pills. Still all interesting though

B12 is indeed the one you have to watch out for...did you know that many cooking processes destroy it almost completely? Ultimately it comes from bacteria that's consumed by animals....and then (some of!) us...

Myself and my wife use this:

Acts as a fortified source of the vitamin, amongst others.

Seriously - look at that video - under the criteria applied by the major international food standard's agencies (including, but not limited to the FDA), casein - the major component of cows milk is an aggressive carcinogen.

Ahhh...controversy.

I've studied the evidence over the last 2 years or so - as a graduate in science (Bsc Hons Applied Physics and Mathematics) - this evidence is compelling and 'un-ignorable'.

Start with watching that video bro - it's scientifically presented data - no bias, no agenda, from a former meat-eating dairy-loving Phd - he has nothing to gain from the message - if, once you've had a look at that and studied 'The China Syndrome' (to start with) you disagree, then am happy to discuss in depth - i didn't just read an article or two - this has been the subject of in-depth study over a long period of time :D

rich

p.s. i grew up on a dairy farm in Ireland, believing the old stuff - there was an advertising campaign that talked about 'Milk is Natures most complete food' - perhaps true.....for young calfs/calves....not for humans.

anyways - getting ahead - check out the video please please

ok i've already watched the video, fantastic speech, it makes you think about it, my thoughts...well after watching this you wanna stop eating animal proteins, no doubt, but that's not easy, i mean i can reduce them and have a normal animal protein level but i can not reduce them to 0. Anyway i don't eat too much eggs and meat, but i have a lot of milk, yogurt, cheese and fish, on the other hand i eat a lot of pasta, cereals (breakfast) and rice, which is good
Amazing when he says that when tumors are already growing you can stop the cancer process by reducing the ingesting of animal proteins
 (if i understood him well, correct me if i'm wrong), he was not talking only about prevention.
Also interesting the comparison between China and USA, and also between the different areas in China.

Great video, thanks for posting it, really.

very welcome my friend.

it's provocative stuff, certainly - and as i said in pm i just sent you, i scoffed when i first heard of it, several years ago - i approached it scientifically with a view to systematically destroying all of his arguments.

nearly 3 years later, i admitted defeat and have never been happier to be wrong - the data (moreso in the book) simply cannot be denied.

anyhow - sermon over - it's my hope that even tho i've been a bit 'preachy' (again!?), people will give the video a watch, as you did, and make their own minds up : )

:D

Its wierd really. if you think about it, if someone accidentally drank a woman's (so human) breast milk you would be mortified and be all 'ewwww'. but we drink milk from a COW and its completely fine. I read once as well something like 3/5's of the worlds population is lactose intolerant

thats absolutely right man!! and yet we drink the milk of an animal without pause, almost - milk that's meant (from an evolutionary perspective) for young calves, not even full-grown cattle - this is what you call a SERIOUSLY successful marketing campaign (and we thought the campaign for bottled water was a success....don't get me started on that one).

quite right about lactose intolerance too - v v v interesting the differences in that in different cultures : )

right, off to make some roasted peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, onions, hash-browns, some barbecue beans, all with big portion of green salad and lots of humus....mmmmmmm.....humus.....!
