Thoughts on Federer's loss

Postby Ir0kuM4t4 » Wed, 02 Jun 2010 11:19

I'm surprised no one did a poll yet so here I go. What are your thoughts about the match? It's the first time Federer loses before a semi on a Grand Slam, since 2004. What do you think Soderling will do from now on at the tournament? What do you think will be Federe's attitude from now on? Your thoughts please!

Somewhere deep down I think Federer is kind of relieved. No more record-breaking pressure. Plus, as Mats Wilander said, he now has about one extra week to prepare for the grass season. So it's possible that he will be better than ever come wimbledon.

As for Söderling I think he has a great chance to take the title. For me the semifinal against Berdych is more uncertain than an eventual final against Nadal. It's really hard to tell how good berdych is at the moment since his side of the draw was the less hard one. Murray was out of form on a surface he doesn't play well at.
Ignorance is bliss

Another phase in Federer's slow, methodical slide.

1st set, Federer was supreme.. Soderling didn't do much wrong, but when Federer's playing like that, no one can beat him.

2nd set, Soderling stole the set here in my view... It was against the run of play. First glimpse Soderling had to break Fed's serve, he took it (he never threaten at all prior to this). Good mental strength from Soderling to stop Fed breaking back.

3rd set, Again, Federer was the better player here, much more comfortable, until crunch time.. Errors came. Soderling took advantage.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the fourth set.. But saw that Fed was up a break... So was Soderling playing out of his skin or did Fed hit errors?

I don't want to sound downbeat on Soderling, but from what I saw, he played amazing yes, but there were also errors from Fed that you wouldn't normally expect from him. Soderling was so strong mentally, he deserves everything he gets.

What do you think Soderling will do from now on at the tournament? What do you think will be Federe's attitude from now on? Your thoughts please!

Soderling's confidence is at its highest right now. He will reach the final and will believe he can win it. I think Nadal will beat him.

I don't think Federer's attitude will change... Remember when he lost to Del Potro at US Open, he came back and won Australia. The match could have easily been Federer's, there were literally a few key points that went Soderling's way which was the difference.

Federer (SUI) Soderling (SWE)

1st Serve % 76 of 119 = 64 % 81 of 126 = 64 %

Aces 12 14

Double Faults 2 6

Unforced Errors 27 42

Winning % on 1st Serve 56 of 76 = 74 % 59 of 81 = 73 %

Winning % on 2nd Serve 23 of 41 = 56 % 25 of 39 = 64 %

Winners (Including Service) 40 49

Receiving Points Won 42 of 126 = 33 % 40 of 119 = 34 %

Break Point Conversions 2 of 7 = 29 % 4 of 9 = 44 %

Net Approaches 13 of 17 = 76 % 18 of 30 = 60 %

Total Points Won 121 124
Fastest Serve Speed 212 KMH 227 KMH

Average 1st Serve Speed 196 KMH 209 KMH

Average 2nd Serve Speed 160 KMH 174 KMH

Q: "...the difference between the Robin you saw last year here and today, was it significant?"

A: "You know, I mean, at times I guess I could have played a bit better. He served well. I didn't take my chances early on in the second set. And then in the third set as well.
So I just missed too many chances today, which I didn't do last year, and I was able to run away with it. Today I couldn't do that."

Mr. GOAT, the question was about Robin :?

Q: "You were 12 0 against him. What did he do today that really bothered you on the court?"

A: "...blah, blah....I'm not blaming the conditions or anything, but I think they were in his favor ...blah blah"

Hmmm....sure thing man, lag was horrible.

Q: "Did you have any feeling going into today's match that you might not win?"

A: "I mean, I respect everyone, but I'm always, how do you say? I'm honest enough to myself that I know I can win them all."

You can? ....that is unbelievable, you are unbelievable, this was an unbelievable tournament and you just played unbelievably unbelievable.

Roger, please lose before QF in Wimbledon so we can all just move on with our tennis.

Roger has always been like this. You can't expect him to answer it any other way, as it wouldn't be him. This is why he is great, he truely believes he can win them all (and he isn't far wrong!)

selective quoting is great, isn't it?

here let me do the same from the very same interview:

and I thought he came up with some great tennis.

But he played aggressive and kept on coming. When the conditions got more heavy when we came back from the rain delay, he played well, you know.

He played really well, you know, for almost an entire match, really.

but I really felt like he played great. He was able to hit consistently through the ball, and on the offensive he put them close to the lines. That's something, you know, that was impressive.

but today he played very well. He was impressive.

But at the end of the day, he needs to take credit. He played incredibly well from the beginning to the end and in very difficult conditions.

He does that all the time, he says he played well..... followed by "conditions favored him".....he really played well "I just missed too many chances today".

That is not a compliment.....this a media squeezed compliment.

Just say he was a better player and therefore I lost. But noooo, its all about Fed. Soderling merely played well....nothing great....its not like he beat the best player ever....nahh....nothing like that, just well.

I simply cleaned the unnecessary repetitiveness of "played well" from his quotes....it is just not sincere and the same 2 words.

Yes, he's pretty arrogant, and rightly so, any player reaching his accomplishments would have the same attitude.

Where is the credit besides "played well"? Federer (or anyone) says "played well" to losers as well.

He was motivated for Roland Garros.....and......look what happened.

Long Live King Roger! He played well against Soderling and Soderling played well too.

This was a well played match with some well hit serves and well hit Forehands and well hit Bahands, some well played volleys and well smashed smashes - some of the well played tennis as of late!

Soderling was just a bit well-er that day. Federer just was not well enough to over take a well playing Soderling, oh well.....

Get Well Roger!
