the only way he is going not to win his 14 or more is if he breaks down mentaly and retires or gets injured .

I have learned that in tennis the more you lose the better you get , and it is on those special matches that really hurt were you learn the most .

He is playing better tennis than 2 years ago when he was dominating , just the competition keeps getting tougher every year .

when I was watching him play at the australian I was amazed at how much better his backhand is , his forehand is as deadly as ever , it's just that his mental game is weak , if he doesn't feel confident he starts making a lot of errors .

Just look at his clean game agains Roddick vs his game against Nadal , the amount of errors that Fed was producing was shocking.

But if he can work on his mental game I can see him winning more often again , I don't think he can dominate anymore as long as Verdasco , Murray and Nadal are out there tough ....

This notion that Roger is done is absolutely silly. He is still a contender in every major that he enters. W/ the exception of Rafa, he probably is the odds-on favorite to win. He won't dominate and win 2-3 majors a year like he used to. But between now and the time he decides to hang 'em up, he will win more majors.

Pete won 3 more majors when he was the same age Roger is now. Furthermore, Roger's game is so graceful and easy that he doesn't risk injury as much as perhaps a Nadal. And his body won't break down like a Hewitt. Should he decide to keep playing, he could easily play into his 30's and be competitive.

Every great champion has a late career run in them where their mind & will overcome age. Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, just to name a few.

brgerflipr1223 made a good point, most great athletes will make a run late in their career. I hope Fed has a good one coming :D

Who said anything about Fed being a great athlete!?!?

I am thinking either Wim. or US OP. this year for Fed. Don't think he gets both. In fact I think there is a BIG chance of him to not get any this year.

Just too many guys out there that can beat him. ....yes, he gets tougher in a major, but if Andreev was able to take him to 5 sets at US Open, then a lot of people can. Wimbledon is a better chance for him this year.

.... I don't agree about all great athletes having a come back late in a career. There really a few select that were able to do that. Most of them either slowly fade away or just disappear.

Feds game is VERY dependent on his movement. Yes, he is graceful, yes his games seems easy and flowing..... but.... we have seen what happens when Fed loosing just a 1/10 of his step. A lot of things go wrong and go wrong quick. There are LOTS of guys out there that can exploit it, especially that fragile Back Hand side.

We all know what goes away first with Age. There were very little Champions in tennis, that relied on movement oh so much....

.... and with the baseline power game that seems to be the trend now, I say Fed. is looking for a very frustrating remainder of his carrier.

I love Fed. but... Who knows!

What do you think if Nadal wouldn't have reached the final?? Roger didn't loose a set before he reached the final (at least he never lost against somebody esle than the spaniard). Without Nadal at the last step, he would have win it 3 times !!!!!!!
Becker, Sampras and the others didn't have the game to play on clay, Fed does. (he grew up on this surface BTW)

I think Federer has hit rock bottom now. Before he might have thought in the back of his head that the others where no real threath to him. That in the end he would stay on top any way. Even after loosing his first place he might have been thinking it wouldnt take him long to bounce back up.

Being the best of the best changes the way you think. You could see that he lost the last bit of his confidence when he lost to Nadal in the AO final. Rock bottom means you can only go up for there. And his rock bottom is being in a grand slam final but loosing!

Yea. Yet, he is losing in the grand slam finals on all surfaces to Nadal, well expect the U.S. Open.

Nadal is slow but surely taking all the grand slams from Federer. He has to regroup for sure. It would not hurt to get that nice backhand up to par again.

Well, Aussie's true blue courts play a bit slower than the Open. I think that Federer's level right now will allow him to win in five over Nadal, assuming that Nadal makes it to the final.

If it is another opponent that he will face in the final there, then Federer will surely win the U.S. Open.

Like you said, it is too early to tell. However, we must say that Federer has been arguably the best on hard court current to date in huge major events.

Fed has been one of the best on hard court majors.

What do u think about federer taking the next tournament and the davis cup off? On his site it said that he WAS NOT injured, he was just trying to prevent an injury from happening? Do u beleive that?

Hard to say. Federer has been going for a while without having a real injury. So, I think it is safe to say that he is preventing an injury from getting worst.

I think he may be taking a little mental break from the sport, just a tad.
