BIG INFO on the control scheme! innovative 'tap' and also 'hold control mechanisms, very in depth interview

http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/videoga ... =fullstory

I quote, "To better explain it, when you look at "Top Spin 3", we had the press and hold feature that you find in any sports game. It's very common to hold down a button and let go at any time. That's how you charge your meter for golf or baseball. So what we are doing in Top Spin, that's still the preferred way if you want to do a good, powerful shot. You can hold down the button and let go at the right time to get the perfect release. That's still there, but another thing that we've added is a quick tap. If you look at that meter, it's actually divided into three sections. There is a quick tap section at the beginning of the meter, you have your main, regular section, and then the very top of it is where if you get it full, you get a very powerful shot down the line or an overhand slam. But that quick tap is for those people who might not be that hardcore into sports games. You might just be a sports enthusiast or a casual gamer. Tennis games have been around since "Pong" and "Tennis for Two". They've been around for a long time and tennis is a good video game in general, so you might not be a hardcore gamer but you want to enjoy "Top Spin" as well. We are hoping that after spending some more time with the game, that they will then find the benefits of using the tap and hold mechanic. We want everyone to be able to enjoy it at the beginning, then explore that whole "Top Spin" experience and play a competitive, strategic round of tennis."

Jon Robinson: Has serve and volley play been improved from "Top Spin 3"?

Michael Kelly: I think it's called turbo at the moment, but when you're doing serve and volley, and you want to slam a 140 mph serve then rush the net because the return is going to be weak, you get a quick boost of speed to rush the net, but you'll take a hit to your fatigue to counter-balance that. It's not turbo like "NBA Jam" or anything like that, but it just gives you that quick boost.

From the article:

"this is still a work in progress but we're really happy with where it's at right now."

"We haven't announced the full lineup yet. That will come at a later date."

"At this point, it's so early and we have a lot of exciting news to come, but I don't think we can confirm or deny (Move or Kinect)."

"There are still a lot of balls up in the air. At this point I don't think we can even talk at all about whether or not (Move or Kinect is) feasible or will be in the final product."

With regard to the release date, what do you take from that? Sounds like it could be a while.

I'll see your quotes and raise you this one: 8)

"It's a lot more fun, it's engaging, it's exciting, and we've been gameplay testing the controls for a few months now."

Thanks for the link, interesting interview. But we should take these "facts"
carefully because we already heard some of it before TS3 release and they weren't in the game. These 2 guys are associate producer and brand manager, that means they are on the "business side", not on the creative side and without a doubt even less on tennis side. So they might not even know what they are talking about. Of course I would love that most of the statements in the interview are true.

What we learn for the gameplay is very interesting if done correctly. I thought that they put an option (before the match or in the option menu) to have a "beginner" style of play and a "sim" style of play but it seems that they are both available on the court. Again, if done correctly it is great news. Simply because we still have the gameplay we like from TS3 (improved of course) but we also have the option to tap the button before hitting instead of charging it. That would mean that we could be able to chose a different shot depending on the situation and get away with a last second shot.

"my player mode" seems to be where we can create a player and as they say "...so you can go in and make anyone who is not in our roster." I really hope that means we can quickly build a player with good stats and not go through career mode for hours. I also hope it means we'll have lots of empty slots to create characters (20 would be good but the more the better).

When they say they still dont know about kinect and move, it really shows that the game won't be ready for february. Personnally i wish they give up on that and fully concentrate on the gameplay we like. Anyway, kinect and move are not here to please simulation or sports people... usually we end up with sports game that not only dont require real move and gesture but even punish the player trying to make good moves. I am a fairly good tennis player and i already can see myself trying to do real backhand and forehands and getting beat to death by a grandma making quick wrist moves. Saying it would annoy me is an understatement. So please, just make this game as perfect as you can for traditional controllers and if you wish make a specific game for kinect and move LATER.

What they say about atmosphere and crowd reaction sounds very good to me.

I cant wait to get more info...
