the news that Top Spin 4 will be released is a real surprise for me. After PAM closed i thought we would have to wait for EA for the next tennis game (i am not counting virtua tennis).
So that is very good news! I absolutely love TS3 despite it's flaws, so i hope they keep the better and replace the bad.
Looking at the pictures it seems like the same game graphically... or maybe worse. Some pics are photoshoped so they look good but i saw 1-2 pics which looked ugly... now i am even wondering if it's the wii version. lol
I am sure they'll polish the missing details from TS3, but 2 things are worrying me: the roster and the gameplay.
The roster: of course it won't be up to date. Of course we'll get players like phillipoussis that don't have their place in such a small roster. That's bad. I am not sure about Nadal because everyone says he has contract with Sony but in the xbox360 version of Smash Court Tennis he was there, so there's still hope. It's lame to give any console exclusive characters. I know that Tennis is not like soccer, nhl, and the likes because you have to contact and find an arrangement with each player and not just get the atp license and have everybody. BUT... there're lots of very popular players that are not well ranked and that we would be happy to get. Don't tell me Gulbis, Gonzales, Almagro, Ferrer, Youzhny, Kohlschreiber, Stepanek, etc will ask for huge amount of cash to be represented in a game. I would prefer they spend the budget on 5 of these guys over one of the top 10 for the same price.
In the press release they say 25 pros, so that include women... My guess is 11 men, 9 women and 5 legends. BUT... I don't know if i read it correctly but it seems it is 25 pros + legends and upcoming talents. Here's the exact quote:
"The Deepest Player Roster Ever – Experience the best collection of tennis talent ever assembled as you now have the option to play with 25 of the world’s top pros, dozens of talented up-and-comers and some of the game’s most iconic legends"
so there's hope that we end up with more than expected. I pray that this is true and not a marketing punchline.
The gameplay: i love the gameplay of ts3 but it should be improved with faster response from the character and adjustment in stroke animations. I am confident for the latter but the core gameplay makes me worried when they say it is totally revamped. Why?! They made a great system that only needed improvements. I know it was unfortunate when you wanted to play with friends because casual gamers dont know how to play properly... but it is like real tennis. I dont mind playing with some friends who don't know to hit the ball correctly, but it's when i play experienced players that i have a blast. The game should be the same. It's a sim, we know it and we accpet it. We want it this way. Now if they make an option for simplified control for beginners, then we have the best of both world.
Oh and i really hope that this time when they'll release trailers and videos they'll get people who know how to play the game so we don't have the impression to see a simulation game of local level tennis.
