Should players be allowed to return from within the baseline?

Sure, why not!

I don't see any need for this tactic at the ITST level.

Returning from inside the baseline?

Postby ILuvBillVal » Sat, 05 Nov 2011 21:54

Prior to reading, this was banned in TS3:

What does everyone think of this? I was reading the Avinash post regarding this and really I don't care either way on the argument. However this is definitely a "World Tour" tactic and I was actually quite surprised to know it wasn't considered illegal in TS4. I know that the effectiveness of it isn't what it was in TS3, however this one example makes it really unfair:

Volleying in this game is by far easier than it's been in the past, and a lot of borderline cheese players take advantage of that with Kelly-ish setups exploiting drop volleys and things of that nature. Now the scenario is that doing this while holding in RB against someone with a weak serve would be beyond cheap. It's like R&V!!! Return and Volley!

As far as any other application it's not a huge deal but I think this one exploitation alone certainly brings it into question in using it at all.

I think it is cheap tactic to do this. Especially when combined with chip an charge.

Will the rule change, No.

btw is it possible to get a good timing?, in TS3 it was easy because timing had nothing to do with hitting a good return, we used risks shots, but now in TS4 seems impossible to return a 200 km/h serve properly if you're inside the baseline no?, asking you guys because as i said yesterday i barely have time to play the game.

Well I wasn't coming to the net or receiving a weak serve.
Avinash's complaint doesn't make sense.

I wasn't as close to the net/service box as possible.
I stood there for a game point and lost the points immediately.
At 3-2 I decided to start inside the court and move back as his player begins the serving animation. It worked enough to have me in the point, he then did a dropshot but I ended up winning the point and for some reason he forfeited.
I asked him to show me the rule regarding return of serve and he said, "is there a written rule that tramline serving isnt allowed? no there isnt. same way you cant stand at the fukin net when i serve."

I'm disappointed Avinash made a thread in the manner that he did. I will not entertain his weird behaviour seeing as his thread got locked.

i tried it just now... 80% of my returns went out when i was standing close to service box but with right timings i was producing very strong returns

I think it's too hard to return most fast serves from the "cheap position." However a lot of players don't use fast serves pretty much most of the all courters and defensive baseliners would be at risk. Then if you put that against an S&V build high reflex = bonus to returning add to that some kind of return serve counter or diesel returner and it could be a pretty tough thing to counter for an average level player.

If you have a strong server and someone comes inside the baseline to try to return, you can just smash body serves at them and they'll hit most of them into the net.

With that said, not that many players have a monster serve, and it's easy to hit huge returns from inside the baseline with good timing.

Just to be clear, Avinash played with 100 power.
I never attempted an aggressive return off his serve.

This topic has no relevance to MY match IMO.

I also don't know why he is judging my game..

Sooo... getting back to the poll... I think it should be banned. The closest you can return should be ON the baseline, not inside of it, at least for ITST matches. For World Tour, do whatever you like to win, cheese it up lol. But it'll balance things a tad on the ITST side.

Let's stay on topic guys please...

Serve form the tramline gives you a clearly advantage, so i understand that is forbidden. I'm not sure that returns inside the court gives you any advantage, other than to distract the server. So i think it shouldn't be banned. Otherwise, yes, it should be banned.

However, if your oponent have a slow serve (no zps, 170-180 KM/H serve for example), why couldn't you stay inside the court?? That's not unreal.
