Drop volley question

Postby edlglide » Sat, 15 Oct 2011 03:15

Just played an ITST match, and my opponent said I had a few cheesy drop volley points -- the way I looked at it, all the drop volleys I hit were the exact shot to hit in real life in that situation. So I'm curious as to whether it's considered cheesy, because I play that shot in that situation regularly and no one else has mentioned it.

I play drop volleys when someone hits the ball so that it drops down just in front of the net and you either have to take it off the bounce or just before it hits the ground. Drop volleys are the shots I play in that situation in real life, so I can't imagine it being cheesy, but I'd still like to know.

I've always thought of cheesy drop volleys as being the ones people play from chest/shoulder height that then drop straight down in front of the net, which is just not possible with the way they've hit the ball.

Then they probably weren't cheesy. I only consider drop volleys cheesy if my opponent uses it as their main volley, such as: Serve > Drop Volley > Repeat.

Yeah m8 ive played you a few times where you dropped, although its frustrating it did seem to be the natural progression of the point, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. You use when uts appropriate, and if some1 keeps setting themselves up for it time and time again then its there fault.

I hate this just as much as anything else, if not more than anything in this game.

Don't worry, he's probably just letting out some steam. I'm sure he wouldn't have called it cheesy if he won

I would say it's a bit cheesy if it's the only way you get points during a game, and if you use the same follow up all the time during a match. Like if you do a drop shot and then goes to the net and puts it away from the net, and don't use any other follow ups to a drop shot during a entire match.

It's very easy to mix up the follow-up for a drop shot. Just stay at the baseline sometimes. That way you don't seem cheesy at all.

I thought it was a bit cheesy when you won two points at 0-30 and 30-30 with drop shots, and then finish at the net, and gets 40-30 to win the game (lucky game winner though, bounced of the net and out). ;)

But again, it's very true what you write and I agree, irl you would have done those drop shots and I hit some bad short balls which gave you the opportunity. I can upload a crappy video of the last games we played and then we can see and discuss if it was a bit cheesy or not. I'm guessing since it's me, some people here will say it's not cheesy just because they don't like me :P Still, it's interesting to just see what people think. I don't think it was very cheesy, but I remember getting very frustrated by how easily you got points that way.

Please don't get me wrong. The match in full was great! It was just the last games where I thought it was a bit much drop shots, which gave you easy net points. :)

hahaha, it's so crappy you won't believe me.
It actually became even more crappy after I cut it shorter..
Well, at least you see something if you want to check it out ;)
Started recording in the middle of the last set as there was some drop shot-net points before which got me fed up enough to try recording.

You see from 4-4, edlglide's service, which I win and get my first chance to finish the match, but is stopped by two drop shots and a net bounce. :)

Yeah, I see what you're saying here -- the thing is, the only reason I kept coming up to the net to finish them off is because I was either already up at the net and hitting a drop volley off a low ball or I was in no man's land when I hit the drop, which meant the only realistic option I had was to charge the net. But I think I only hit 3-4 actual drop shots all match (not drop volleys from close to the net), and I know one of them was accidental. Don't remember when it was in the match; it may be one of the ones you are talking about -- was trying to hit a little backhand slice and accidentally hit the trigger and hit a drop shot instead. And I know it was in a situation where I would normally not hit a drop shot.

Yep, just watched the video -- that drop shot around 3:15 or so is the one where I was just trying to hit a slice down the line. So I definitely apologize for that one...didn't mean to hit that. Actually thought I was going to lose the point too; charged the net just hoping to get lucky.

in my opinion drop volleys are just overpowered. i understand when the opponent keeps hitting short balls to prevent power volley it looks like a fair solution but no... that's too easy.

i used to play drop volleys but now i just feel dirty if i do, so i just use deep or short control volleys when i m given short balls.

Yeah i like to do short control volleys too and they work really good, maybe not as good as dropvolleys but it definetely feels better to win a point with a shor slice volley than a drop one.

yeah, anyway it s automatic for me now, when i hear the sound of a drop volley i arm a dropshot straight away without even thinking.

i d shout at and report anyone who would use drops when im at the net, but if it s after a drop volley it s 100% fair to use crosscourt drop on the next shot imo

nah, no way is that in the bad books...
aslong as you made and worked the point out to be that way, anticipating from the shots your making beforehand and knowing which way its coming back then Hell Noo..!

only when players are maxed out on SnV (20/0/0 - or very close by a point or 2 either way) AND with volley attributes... weak piss poor shandy pants of a player will be only looking for the win and not the match.

i've actually came up with an effective solution to deal with SnV if anyone would like to hear it? would've posted before, but gotta a hellova lotta greif when i called the prominent SnV's - "NetSh@ggers" on here looool

saying that... not seen a lot of them on WT lately... are they still active as much on the Tournaments since the fanstastic last update stopped them from hitting a winner every ball from the net? (Moochin' Fookers...)
